Get your camper Hooked on the thrill of fishing while exploring some of Southern California’s most scenic mountain lakes and streams! Campers spend the week learning practical fishing skills, experimenting with different techniques, and discovering how fishing changes from one environment to the next.

Campers develop a variety of fishing skills, including bait fishing, fly-fishing techniques, stream fishing, and still-water fishing. Off-site locations may include Arrowbear Lake, Big Bear Lake’s North Shore, Deep Creek, and Lake Gregory in Crestline.

The week builds toward the specialty’s signature experience: an exclusive three-hour charter fishing trip on Big Bear Lake, where campers head out aboard a pontoon boat and put everything they’ve learned throughout the week to the test.

What Campers Learn

• Casting & Rod Handling: Learn proper rod handling and develop accurate, controlled casting techniques.
• Knots & Rigging: Practice essential fishing knots and learn how to prepare fishing setups for different techniques and conditions.
• Bait & Lure Selection: Discover how different baits and lures work and when to use them.
• Fly Fishing: Learn the fundamentals of fly casting, line control, presentation, and introductory fly-fishing techniques.
• Reading the Water: Identify promising fishing areas by observing current, structure, depth, vegetation, and shoreline features.
• Stream Fishing: Explore how fishing moving water differs from fishing a lake, including positioning, presentation, and finding areas where fish may be holding.
• Fish Handling: Learn responsible techniques for safely landing, handling, and releasing fish.
• Charter Fishing Experience: Put the week’s skills into action during an exclusive three-hour pontoon boat fishing trip on Big Bear Lake.
